Battling Our Enemies - February 3 Readings: Exodus 21–23, Matthew 22:1–14, Psalms 18:40–46, Proverbs 3:29–30

Links to today's readings: Exodus 21–23, Matthew 22:1–14, Psalms 18:40–46, Proverbs 3:29–30

Sometimes it seems that the whole world is stacked against us. Christians are befuddled by the power of wickedness all around them and assume defeat. We need to be reminded of the promise that God gave to Israel in Exodus 23:20-28. They were headed toward the Promised Land occupied by people who had no intention of leaving. Powerful armies blocked the way through the wilderness. The task was daunting.

But God gave them a promise of his presence to go before them. The presence and power of God would overcome any foe. They would not be on their own in the battle.
I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. For My angel will go before you and bring you to the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. Exodus 23:22-23
Of course, this was a promise given to obedient Israel, the nation faithfully worshiping the One True God. But obedient Israel had a promise of God's power.
I will cause the people ahead of you to feel terror and throw into confusion all the nations you come to. I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you in retreat. I will send the hornet in front of you, and it will drive the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites away from you. Exodus 23:27-28
None of us will be battling Hivites or Jebusites this week, but we will face multitudinous challenges, stresses, and fears. We can face them with the confidence knowing that God works his mighty power through and on behalf of his (obedient) people.
Father, thank you for your mighty power that goes before me as I answer your call. I am not left to my own power and my own ability, but can rely on yours. I praise you for your strength.

  1. I praise God for His mighty strength and power displayed through me in New York these past few days of ministry. I really did have a sense of His blessing and presence. It's a wonderful feeling.
