There is an old adage that Christianity is always one generation from extinction. It is, in reality, true. If we want the church to last then we must pass it along to younger folks who will continue the work.

Paul seemed to understand that. When he was a young Christian recently converted from being the church's greatest enemy, one man put his arm around him and saw that he was accepted by the church. Time and again, Barbabas included Saul, encouraged him, and led him to grow in the faith. Then the sad events took place which separated the two men into two missionary groups. Paul took Silas with him and headed back to the churches of Galatia.

When he returned to Derbe and Lystra, he came into contact with a young man named Timothy. Paul saw potential in him and took him into his traveling group. As soon as Paul was on his own he was looking to pour his life into another, someone who could carry on the ministry when Paul was gone. A wise man is always looking to train younger people to serve God in future generations.

Each of us needs a Barnabas, someone who will lead and guide us as we grow. We also need a Timothy; no, we ought to have several Timothys! It is not enough that I live my faith, but I must also teach and train others to do the same.

The greatest heritage any of us can leave is a small army of kingdom warriors who will continue to fight the good fight when we have gone to glory.

Father, may my life count in the lives of others.
