January 1, 2014 Readings: Genesis 1-2, Matthew 1, Psalm 1, Proverbs 1:1-3

In the beginning, God...

That is something great to remember as we embark on this new adventure. This is the first day of the year, and as a holiday, it is often the first day that I fall behind on my annual Bible reading commitment. But it is good to remember that God is the one who makes all things new.

This new year is also a new opportunity. The story of creation is amazing. God did not labor to make this universe; he simply spoke it into being. "Let there be light." He is not limited by what has been or by what is. God makes all things new and renews his grace daily.

Just as God's creative power was not limited by what had been, or by what was, God's work in your life, his restoring and transforming grace, is not limited by what you have been to this point in your life or by what you are today.

Father, I thank you that your grace is sufficient and that your power is unlimited. Nothing is impossible with you. We come to you this year asking for renewal, for power and strength, for a new experience of your grace. May this coming year, as we commit to reading your Word regularly, be a time of growth for each of us. Help each of us to follow through on our commitments to this Challenge.
